New fatty acids from Colombian Caribbean Sea sponges

چکیده
The fatty acid composition of whole phospholipids from marine sponges collected from the Colombian Caribbean Sea was determined as part of our studies on the order Halichondrida: Halichondria magniconulosa, Halichondria lutea, Petromica ciocalyptoides, Axinyssa ambrosia, Didiscus oxeata and Dragmaxia undata. Structure elucidation was accomplished by means of gas chromatography retention parameters and GCMS. Eight new fatty acids were identified by their methyl esters and N-acylpyrrolidide derivatives (i.e. 5-methyl-6-octadecenoic, 16-methyl-11-heptadecenoic, 8-methyl-4-tetracosenoic, 8,17-dimethyl-5-octadecenoic, 23-methyl-8-tetracosenoic, 20-methyl-18-tetracosenoic, 4,17-tetracosadienoic and 22,27-dimethyl-5,9-octacosadienoic acids). These findings establish alternative fatty acid biosynthetic possibilities for these organisms. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Antifouling activities against colonizer marine bacteria of extracts from marine invertebrates collected in the Colombian Caribbean Sea and on the Brazilian coast (Santa Catarina).
The growth inhibition of 12 native marine bacteria isolated from Aplysina sponge surfaces, the shell of a bivalve, and Phytagel immersed for 48 h in sea water were used as indicator of the antifouling activity of the extracts of 39 marine organisms (octocorals, sponges, algae, and zoanthid) collected in the Colombian Caribbean Sea and on the Brazilian coast (Santa Catarina). Gram-negative bacte...
متن کاملCoral cavity sponges depend on reef-derived food resources: stable isotope and fatty acid constraints
The diet of cavity sponges on the narrow fringing reefs of Curaçao, Caribbean was studied. The origin and resources of the bulk food of these sponges, i.e., dissolved organic matter (DOM), were identified using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. We found that phytoplankton and its derived DOM from the adjacent open sea and from reef overlying water is not the main so...
متن کاملSterol and lipid composition of three Adriatic Sea sponges.
The sterol and fatty acid composition of three Adriatic Sea sponges (Geodia cydonium and two unidentified Tedania sp.), collected at the same time and same place, was established. Twenty-four sterols and forty fatty acids were identified. The identical ecological conditions, including the diet, allowed us to apply the results obtained for taxonomical conclusions, based on the biodiversity of th...
متن کاملCoral mucus fuels the sponge loop in warm- and cold-water coral reef ecosystems
Shallow warm-water and deep-sea cold-water corals engineer the coral reef framework and fertilize reef communities by releasing coral mucus, a source of reef dissolved organic matter (DOM). By transforming DOM into particulate detritus, sponges play a key role in transferring the energy and nutrients in DOM to higher trophic levels on Caribbean reefs via the so-called sponge loop. Coral mucus m...
متن کاملKinase inhibitory, haemolytic and cytotoxic activity of three deep-water sponges from North Western Australia and their fatty acid composition.
The c-AMP dependent protein kinase (PKA) inhibition, haemolytic activity, and cytoxicity of 21 extracts obtained from North Western Australian sponges collected from depths of 84-135 m were investigated. Hexane extracts from Ircinia/Sarcotragus sp. and Geodia sp. displayed PKA inhibitory activities of 100 and 97% respectively (at 100 microg/mL), while aq. methanol extracts from Haliclona sp. ex...
